An Introduction to RUYA MAPS

Mission

RUYA MAPS explores the pressing issues of today through global, contemporary art. Our thematic approach looks to the shared human experience and to the artists exploring it.

Our mission is delivered in a number of ways through exhibitions, publications and online content. We have a roaming exhibition programme that allows us to be truly global. A RUYA MAPS exhibition takes a topic that is common to the human condition and unpacks its significance across material culture, drawing on history and literature as well. We establish relationships with established and emerging international artists, and work with them to develop ideas and new commissions.

We also produce innovative publications that expand the form of the exhibition catalogue. Fully illustrated, our publications have insightful essays from the specialists that we have collaborated with. Our online features introduce new and emerging artists from outside the art world to wider audiences. Whether it is articles and interviews, or podcasts and galleries, this digital content allows us to respond quickly to pertinent topics.

Our Origins

RUYA MAPS was established to address specific needs, identified by the Ruya Foundation whilst carrying out its unique work in Iraq. Ruya Foundation’s journey began in 2012, it works to aid and enrich culture, building bridges between Iraq and the world.

Working with artists, especially young and emerging artists, in this context has given Ruya a specialist insight into creating cultural projects in areas of social or political instability. In order to address these challenges, and more, on a global scale, Ruya established RUYA MAPS to achieve a broader and more geographically diverse remit.

Based in London, RUYA MAPS has its own distinct programme, but tackles similarly pertinent themes.
